Deaf Awareness
Do you think Deaf Awareness should be compulsory in a work place? I think it would help if it was.
When people approach me about my deafness and ask questions I can happily chat about it, and go on as long as they want me to. But starting it off myself I find hard. I have work colleagues that know I’m HOH, and as you know I wear a badge there too. But some who know how my deafness effects me, don’t act accordingly as they should. I find a conversation has started, but I wasn’t aware and they wonder why I look blank.
In my job on a ward, I was pointed out a particular area to me that needed doing, but the way she approached I thought she was talking to someone past me, as she did not look like she was looking at me. It was only when I glanced up I seen her pointing at some soil on the floor, that I was working my way round to, that I knew it was me in the end she was speaking to after all, as I’m the only cleaner there!
Also on this same area I clean, which I’ve been doing for a few years now, there are still some staff there that were originally there when I first started cleaning on this ward. But some have seem to forgot my deafness, although my deafness was made fully aware at the beginning. I get asked to do something and I’m not aware cos I did not hear my name be called, and they did not make sure I was looking at them first before speaking. The newer staff members seem to do a better job getting this right! I’ve had one of the original staff members come right up near me, only for me to bump into them when I turn around cos I did not hear them. Although this has not happened for sometime now.
Let me know what you think about this, and place your vote too! Thanks!

I think Lady was trying to decorate

My cat Lady
I think Lady was trying to decorate tonight,
as when I came home from work my small artist brush, that I originally put on top of my paint tin was near the door when I came in the living room. She was all sparkley eyes waiting for me bless her.
She’s doing very well at the moment as she can be health wise, and takes her medication well for her overactive thyroid, which I hide in a piece of chicken, ham or spam at the moment. I change the meat I every few days to keep her interested which helps, and offer it as a treat. In February she has her check-up where more blood will be taken, to monitor her thyroid and kidneys. I won’t be looking forward to this and neither will Lady. Trips to the vets are not a good place in her eyes. She all claws with the vets when we go there, so its an upsetting time for both of us. For Lady being there, and for me watching how she now behaves, cos its not what she used to be like.

Feeling better already
I may not be moving yet, but just by deciding something in my life that needs to be changed, I feel in control and happy in parts. Also I feel a little weight has come off my shoulders. I know I have a long way to go, as counselling should hopefully help me to get there. But feeling as I do at the moment its obvious living where I am currently does not help the situation. Hopefully I get somewhere soon
As for my “Me Days” I’m doing on Friday’s, (see “Some changes are happening – part 4″ post) I know I’ve only just started doing this to not know the benefits completely, but from the first one, I had I feel great.

Cars and Rain
What is it with some car drivers and rain?
When we had that recently and I was at the bus stop waiting to come home from work, I noticed there were quiet a few cars going by putting there foot down on the accelerator, regardless that the road is very wet and light up ahead.
I thought that your supposed to double your distance when judging to break? Or are we now trying to do the equivalent of the long jump, and see how far you skid when braking? Its stupid and dangerous!

Are you addicted to Sim City?
I recently got round to buying Sim City Societies. Which I knew once I got my hands on this then I’ll loose track of time, if it was going to do the same effect on me like the older version I played a few years ago for a sort time. I find it relaxing and time flies by as mentioned before, because its easy to get totally absorbed in it.
Anyone here play a Sim City game?

Some changes are happening – Part 4
Wrote a letter last week to my housing about why I want to move and how I feel living here, at the same time as asking about a particular flat that I know has been empty a few weeks, but apparently has been empty alot longer than that I’ve been told. Doubt I’ll get it until its my turn of being offered one, but I’ll see. Should here from the appropriate person in next few days. In the meantime I gave my lawnmower to my boyfriend, as I’ll be sticking to a gardener to do the mowing if next property involves maintaining a garden. But if I do get the one I mentioned about, then won’t need it for there.
I’ve decided Friday’s is a ‘Me Day’, in which when I get up that day, I don’t put my hearing in aids for most of the day, and just do whatever I feel around the flat, which yesterday when I got up, that was a long soak in the bath with a Radox Muscle Soak and washing my hair. Watcing TV with subtitles on (which I do now with my hearing aids in) and going on the internet a bit followed by playing Sim City Societies. My mobile phone I left switched off till the afternoon before going to work, and tidying up around the flat.
Tuesday will see my donated furniture and mountain bike being collected for a local charity shop, once that’s gone I’ll be decorating my hallway to freshen it up, and touch up my yellow wall with paint I still have left, after filling in tiny holes where my nails used to be for my pictures. That’s all I’ll be doing decorating wise, then my housing provider shouldn’t have anything to complain about.
I also went back to my G.P. recently to see what was happening in regards to my counselling, as I’d not heard anything. I’m still on their books, and they did contact me later that day as instructed by my G.P. in which she will phone me back Wednesday what’s happening, when counsellor is back.

Is Typetalk no more?
Something was discovered recently by MM regarding Typetalk, which was mentioned on The Deaf Village. To see this in more detail visit ‘I Look So I Can Hear’ blog at http://funnyoldlife.wordpress.com/tag/typetalk/ and visit yesterdays post ‘Is Typetalk on the way out?’
I don’t use Typetalk myself, but as you know in previous posts it was something I was going to look into, and use at some point. What’s going to happen if we lose this service? It’s worrying to think.

Some changes are happening – Part 3
Had the bloke who’s registered to take the rubbish, after getting a quote from him yesterday. He came back later that same day…… so all clear now!
Had a surprise call, regarding the message I left last week for request of viewing a flat I was interested in. Was going to see it Wednesday, but later in the afternoon by text I was told after someone else came to view flat that day, they have took on the tenancy so not available. So I’m gutted.
Don’t blame him though for letting it out, after all the rent money will be coming in for him now. Learnt a lesson from this….. next time there’s one I’m interested in get a viewing straight away!

Some changes are happening – Part 2
Today the gardener came to make a start on clearing my back garden, as so when I look through my bedroom window, I’ll see straight away if someone decides to dump on there again at the bottom. He did a brilliant job…. more than planned in the 4 hours I was paying him for
Next stage is getting this rubbish cleared, which is 17 bags of garden waste plus a pile of assorted rubbish found. I have someone coming Monday who’s registered to clear waste, to give me a quote on what it will cost for it to be removed. Once this is done and depending on costs, I’ll be moving somewhere else that’s a nice area to be in, in a month or two
I’ll keep you posted!!

Email did not work
As you know I had problems last year regarding access in Audiology, and finally I was given an email address to contact them that way, should I need future appointments with them, when I cannot hear well on the phone to do it.
Well I had the inconvenience of going into Audiology to make an appointment for tube change on my hearing aids as the email given to me did not work. I could not get in today when I asked if I could get in now, due to me having to come down and make it with the email not being recognised, but I was given some tubes so I could put them in myself, which I did not mind because I’ve done them twice before. The receptionist was quiet surprised to find this email did not work, but I was given another email to contact her, in which when I do I’m to address it to her so it gets to her ok. So we’ll see if this one works better when time comes to contacting them…. I imagine it will anyway, as this compared to the last email looks like a proper email address.
